Helena Preventive Children’s Dentistry
Keeping Little Smiles Safe
When it comes to taking care of children’s smiles, prevention is the name of the game. Rather than waiting to fix a dental problem after it pops up, these services will help your child avoid pesky cavities and gum disease in the first place! With just two easy appointments each year, we can give your child the kind of problem-free smile they (and you!) never have to worry about. Has it been more than six months since they’ve been to the dentist? If so, contact us today to schedule an appointment.
Checkups & Cleanings
Every beautiful smile we create starts with a standard checkup and cleaning. These appointments will give our team the chance to get to know your child, learn about their dental health, and do all we can to help keep their smile healthy year after year.
Periodontal disease, better known as gum disease, is an extremely common infection that attacks the gums, roots of the teeth, as well as the bone that supports them. Not only can it make the gums very tender and painful, but it can even lead to tooth loss! This is why our team will examine your child’s gums whenever they come to visit us, and if we spot a problem, we’ll use periodontal therapy, consisting of a special deep cleaning, to address the infection directly and get rid of it.
A child’s back teeth are very vulnerable to developing cavities because their rough, pitted surfaces trap plaque and food particles, plus they are pretty difficult for little hands to brush. To give these teeth a little bit of extra protection, we can apply a clear, thin layer of a (BPA-free) plastic-based substance to the teeth to create an invisible barrier that harmful, cavity-causing plaque, acids, and bacteria cannot cross. They only take minutes to place and can protect the teeth for years to come.
Do you have a little athlete at home? If so, it’s very important for them to always play with the appropriate protective equipment, but are they keeping their smile safe as well? We can provide them with a custom-made mouthguard that will be much more comfortable and durable than anything you can buy in the store, and with it, you can have one less thing to worry about the next time they hit the field, mat, or court!
Nightguards for Bruxism
Bruxism is a condition where a child unconsciously clenches their jaw and grinds their teeth while they sleep. Over time, this can severely wear down their teeth to the point that they actually break! To help your child with this sneaky problem, we can recommend that they wear what is called a nightguard to bed. This is a small, custom-made mouthpiece that will fit comfortably over the teeth to provide a protective barrier that prevents them from grinding together.
Fluoride is a mineral found in many foods that has long been shown to help protect the teeth from tooth decay and cavities, which is why you’ll so often find it in both toothpaste and tap water. Many children aren’t getting enough fluoride every day to keep their teeth fully protected, which is why we’re happy to provide our patients with a topical fluoride treatment at every standard checkup. It only takes a few minutes, is completely painless, and it’s one of the best ways to keep them cavity-free!
